Overview

Cherry Barbs are named for their spawning color. During breeding, the male will turn a bright, cherry red. The rest of the time, they are silver and black with a horizontal stripe that is golden or orange in color running along the sides of their body.

They should be given plenty of swimming space, but also plenty of hiding places since they can be timid. They should only be housed with other peaceful tankmates and prefer to be kept in a group of six or more of their own species, which will make them more comfortable and confident.

Their diet should include both meaty foods and vegetable matter for proper nutrition. A high quality pellet or flake food is essential, and they can be supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, shrimp and tubifex.
