Overview
Like most cichlids, Black Convict Cichlids, or simply Convict Cichlids, are sexually dimorphic. But unlike other cichlids, the female is generally more brightly colored. Both sexes will have a white or grey base and thick black banding along their body. Females will also have orange splotches of pigment on their lower body and dorsal fins. Males are generally larger.
They will thrive best with plenty of swimming space, a gravel substrate and rocks to hide in. They are not recommended for many community aquariums as they can be extremely aggressive, but can be usually be housed with other species with similar temperaments and same size or larger.
Convicts are not picky eaters. They will accept most pellet, flake, frozen and live foods and should be fed a varied diet including both meaty and herbivorous preparations given their omnivorous nature.
