Xiphophorus maculatus is the common generic name for these two fish. The main difference between them is in their respective coloration. The Sunset Platy has a gradient of colors starting with bright ones near the head which tapers to darker colors toward the tail, resembling a sunset, and hence the name Sunset Platy. The Golden Leopard Platy has a background base color of yellow or gold, but with superimposed black spots in a reticulated pattern resembling a leopard coat, and hence the name.
