Overview

Super Red Apistogrammas are a line bred color variant of the Apistogramma cactuoides species that also includes a few other colorations, like "Orange Flash". The Super Red variant has been bred to have as much red on the fins as possible. They have silvery bodies with tan or yellowish bellies and one thick horizontal stripe running laterally down the body. They have a huge, flowing dorsal fin that almost looks like a mohawk, and a spade shaped tail fin. Males will generally be larger and have more impressive finnage.

They are not picky about how their tank is decorated, but for a natural look, a sandy substrate can be used and driftwood can be arranged into caves. They prefer dimmer lighting and live plants that can grow in low light can also be added. They can be kept with other semi-aggressive community fish but should not be mixed with other apistogramma unless they are a breeding pair.

They are carnivorous and will accept a variety of meaty foods. They should be given bloodworms, tubifex, brine shrimp and daphnia--live or frozen. They can also eat high quality pellet and flake foods.
