Overview

The Tiger Oscar have a dark, blue toned brown or charcoal colored background with an orange and red pattern covering their body, which is oval shaped. They have large, protruding lips and as babies also have quite large, slightly bulging eyes. The albino variant retains the orange and red pattern but is white in color and has red pupils.

They will appreciate an aquarium with a sandy substrate and plenty of rockwork or wood. Make sure any decor items are not delicate and that heaters and other objects are well secured, since large Oscars may rearrange the tank at will. As juveniles, they may live in groups--forming tight clusters with each other--but become more solitary with age. They are not incredibly territorial, but are semi-aggressive because they will readily consume any fish that fits in their large mouth and are ravenous eaters. This should be taken into consideration when choosing tankmates.

Oscars have a strong and quick feeding response. They will readily eat feeder fish, however caution should be exercised when feeding these as they may carry parasites or disease into your tank. They can also eat earthworms, bloodworms, shrimp, pellets and high quality flake food. There are also specialized diets for large carnivores and cichlid diets that will provide optimal nutrition.
