Sparkling Gouramis (also known as pygmy gouramis). These delightful freshwater fish are native to Southeast Asia and have some fascinating features:

  1. Appearance:

    • Sparkling Gouramis are small, reaching a maximum length of about 1.6 inches (4 cm) when mature.
    • Their bodies are long, thin, and streamlined, shimmering with iridescent scales.
    • When they swim, they resemble little sparkling bullets, reflecting vibrant colors.

  2. Natural Habitat:

    • Sparkling Gouramis thrive in slow-moving or still waters with abundant vegetation.
    • You can find them in streams, rivers, ponds, and even rice paddies.

  3. Unique Adaptation:

    • These gouramis possess a labyrinth organ, which functions like a lung.
    • They periodically swim to the water’s surface to gulp air, allowing them to survive in low-oxygen and sometimes dirty conditions.

  4. Lifespan:

    • On average, Sparkling Gouramis live for 4-5 years.
    • Genetics and quality of care play significant roles in their lifespan.

  5. Tank Needs:

    • The recommended minimum tank size for Sparkling Gouramis is 10 to 15 gallons. Opting for a 15-gallon tank provides a little extra space, which is beneficial.
    • Ensure the tank has plenty of vegetation, rocks, and hiding spots.
    • Maintain stable water conditions to support their well-being.

    Water Parameters:

    • Water temperature: 76°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C).
    • pH levels: 6 to 7.
    • General hardness (GH): 4-8 dGH.
    • Carbonate hardness (KH): 4-8 dKH.

    Tank Mates:

    • Sparkling Gouramis are super compatible with other peaceful species:
      • Small fish like tetras (like embers and neon tetras).
      • Rasboras.
      • Shrimp
      • Minnows.
