Overview

The Silver Arowana is a unique and interesting fish. They have long, snakelike bodies and are true bony fish. The large mouth faces upwards and has two thin appendages for detecting prey. They are metallic silver in color, and have an impressive bottom fin that runs along the length of their body.

They require a large tank to accommodate their massive adult size and give them adequate swimming space. It must have a tight fitting lid, as they will leap during feeding time and may also jump at their leisure. They can survive out of water for a short amount of time by breathing air. At their adult size, there are not many compatible tankmates for them as they will eat any fish that can fit in their mouths, but as juveniles they can be housed with less aggressive cichlids, synodontis cats, plecostomus, and bichirs of a similar size.

They are carnivores and will accept a wide variety of meaty foods. They may be fed feeder fish, however, caution should be exercised since feeder fish can carry disease or parasites. They will enjoy pellets, flakes, live and frozen food. There are even specialized, nutritionally balanced prepared foods available for "monster fish" such as themselves.
