Overview

The "Electric Yellow" morph of the Labidochromis caerulus is understandably popular in the fish keeping hobby. They are more docile than most other mbuna's and an easy beginner cichlid. Their bodies are a striking yellow color in adulthood whether they are male or female, though males may generally have more black on their fins and will be brighter during spawning and can grow larger.

The aquarium should have a sandy substrate and have many rocks arranged to provide caves for them for hiding. It can live peacefully with many other community cichlids and also can be kept in groups of its own species, but males become territorial during spawning. There should be several females per male to disperse their sometimes over enthusiastic amorous pursuits. They are mouthbrooders and the females should release their fry in about 3 weeks. Electric Yellow Cichlids should be fed a diet consisting of both vegetable matter and meaty foods.
